Writing Dialogue: Two "Rules" to Keep in Mind

Two things to ask when you're writing a dialogue scene (or editing one).

  1. Does this advance the action?

  2. (And/or) Are my characters' personalities shining through in their responses?

[NEW BLOG] - Here's a look at how this works, things to keep in mind, and a writing exercise to try. Read Here.

Long Overdue Holiday Catalogue

Wow, 2022 has been a busy year over here at Long Overdue! We published/assisted on 6 new books. Check out these 6 titles + our collection of children's board books, regular children's books, memoir, fiction, and more. View the catalogue here or click on the image above.

The Horners From Ice Cream Fine Storybooks

We gave newsletter cover love to The Book of Monsters From A to Z and The Gobblerwobbly, but feel like we've short-changed The Horners. And that's not okay! This is another great book from Kate Buss and Ice Cream Fine Storybooks that deserves a little shoutout. Here's the back of the book description:

In a misty barn on the outskirts of town, a family of unicorns are just beginning their day. Dad trots off to work with his hat and briefcase, Mom is still wrestling Baby into his highchair, while Brother and Sister are off inventing some fun new game to play.

It’s just another day in the life for this quirky family of unicorns!

Record Noteworthy Stories with Family & Friends

Fast turnaround for our next newsletter (going out either December 6th, 7th, or 13th), and we'll share more there about our exciting Noteworthy stories project, BUT here's a sneak preview:

We're offering a service where you and your family, or you and some friends, or just yourself can hop on a Zoom call and record stories. All you have to do is show up. We'll play the role of interviewer, audio recorder, and note-taker. If you've ever said, "We have all these stories but we've never written them down/recorded them," this is our solution to help. And have fun in the process!

Charging $99 for the hour (includes a written transcript and recording afterward). You can book times right here or email for more information (either library@longoverduestories.com or chris@longoverduebooks.com). Planning to add a few morning sessions as well around Christmas when families are together. We might even send over some coffee!

Keeping up with Long Overdue

Best place to keep up with all things Long Overdue is a tie between our monthly newsletter and our Instagram page (shoutout to Annie Cerovich!). If you enjoy this newsletter and know someone who might enjoy it as well, let us know, we'll make sure to add them to our subscriber list. We also got back on Facebook recently, you can follow us here.

And check out our website - Long Overdue Books. Long Overdue Books is a community for creating books. It's a place for authors (and soon-to-be-authors), readers, editors, artists, and designers to come together and move their stories from ideas to finished books.

Next newsletter - Aiming for December 6th or 7th range. In the meantime, if you have any questions, ideas, stories to tell, you can reach Cal the Librarian at - library@longoverduestories.com
